Courage, hope and resilience are just a few lessons black history can teach.

Tiffany Laing sought to infuse those practices in something for children.

In 2016, the mom of two launched Bevy and Dave, an award-winning toy company that creates engaging tools for pre-school and kindergarten-aged children.

The theme? Black excellence, of course.

“Our mission is to change the narrative of Black history and build leaders,” states the Bevy and Dave website. “Our educational toys are instruments to educate, inspire and empower children to be their best selves.”

Laing, a former college educator, has said black history in schools is often limited to slavery and oppression. Her toys and tools change that, teaching youth about black history makers through jigsaw puzzles and blocks.

Self leadership is also a major focus of Bevy and Dave, whose History Makers Puzzle Block Set was nominated for Toy of the Year, Rookie category, in its flagship year. The set, which includes 30 wooden blocks with six playing sides, has won two other awards since.

Parents and teachers are also invited to use Bevy and Dave as an innovative way to activate learning environment. The company partners with several schools to promote that mission.
