Michelle Obama encourages mothers and daughters to reach outside their comfort zones

Former First Lady Michelle Obama on Instagram posted an ode to her mother and two daughters right in time for Mother’s Day.

Obama rarely posts her girls 17-year-old Sasha and 20-year-old Malia on social media. But on Friday, she shared how she passed down lessons from her mother.

Despite a different setting — Sasha and Malia grew up in the First Family while Michelle Obama and her brother Craig were raised in a small Chicago apartment, the message has always been the same.

“In seeking out new perspectives and reaching outside our comfort zones, we can discover more about ourselves,” Obama wrote on Instagram beneath a photo of her and the girls in Venice, Italy.

She said she hopes mothers everywhere can pass that on to their daughters.

Obama briefly recalled how her parents cobbled up enough money to send her on a high-school trip to Paris that changed her life. She, of course, has been fortunate enough to travel the world with Sasha and Malia.

“Now that I’m raising kids of my own, I wanted to pass that lesson down to my own girls,” Obama said.
