A South African mom just made it easier to swim with black hairstyles
Nomvuyo Treffers is right on time.
The South African mother is the creator of Swimma Caps, swim caps roomy enough for high-volume, black hairstyles, such as afros, braids and dreadlocks
Treffers, 39, has dreads herself and was bothered that she couldn’t always swim with her two daughters, Tamasha and Zawadi, the adorable sisters who also have big, bold natural hair. Treffers found herself missing quality time by making excuses for not getting in the water.
Drying dreads is a lengthy process, and Treffers’ stretch down her back.
When she tried to order specialized caps, the cost was too high.
On her Swimma website, the photographer of Cape Town explained that it “didn’t make sense that in a country where the majority of people have afros, braids and dreadlocks, etc, I could not simply buy a swimming cap that fit me.”
As we know, with necessity comes invention.
Treffers launced Swimma Caps in 2016, and they are available everywhere for an affordable price in a variety of sizes and colors.
In middle school, my every-day ‘fro era, if a swim cap did fit over my hair, water simply gushed up through the sides.
Swimma, which gloriously comes in sizes AfroRegular, AfroLarge and now AfroTots, aims for the ultimate protection of your hair, and the creation also showcases black women involved in swimming.
Summer is among us, and Treffers has given all the queens out there a funky, fashionable and smart way to take a dip without worrying about hair.
